MMC 2011

We made the trip down to Flushing Meadows in Queens, NY for the Maloof Money Cup this weekend.  The skating was awesome, and Vans hooked us up with passes to get the best spot in the place.  Here are a few photos from the contest.

 

I had to climb way out on some scaffolding to get this view.  The event staff was really cool to let me dangle up there.

 

We ended up a lot closer to the action, and got to hang with some of the pros. 

 

Watching these guys skate in person is pretty crazy, it was just banger after banger.

  I couldn't leave without just one fan photo, so why not get one with the Boss?

We got some skating in around Brooklyn.  Full NYC skate mission coming soon...

Plans are underway to rebuild the embankment at the MLK center in Newport.  This is one of the few areas in the city that skateboarding is allowed, but there are no permanent, skatable obstacles there.  The deteriorating banks will be removed and replaced with fresh concrete this spring.  This video of the Adidas team in Copenhagen shows a spot that is providing some inspiration for the project.
 

Oakley Surf Shop Challenge

The second stop on SURFER Magazine’s 2011 Oakley Surf Shop Challenge (OSSC) will take place on April 11 or 12 at Casino Pier in Seaside Height, NJ. Shops from Maine to New Jersey have been invited to participate.

SURFER Magazine’s OSSC event series teams shop employees with shop pros for a chance at $10,000 and the title of the best surf shop in the U.S. This year will see 280 surfers from 70 shops around the country compete at seven regional stops before culminating at the Huntington Beach pier in September for the National Championship.

Quiksilver releases “Moments”, a 24 minute film starring champion Kelly Slater, Dane Reynolds, Jeremy Flores, Craig Anderson, Clay Marzo and the rest of the global Quiksilver surf team and was filmed in Indonesia, Hawaii, Tahiti, Mexico, Australia, France and Puerto Rico. Moments was shot in full HD using Phantom Gold, Cineflex, Red One and 16mm film cameras and features unique perspectives such as a Phantom helicopter angle at Grajagan in Indonesia, that has never been seen before in a surf film. Moments also uses an artistic approach to explore the individuality and uniqueness of each surfer’s style. Enjoy!

The Element "Make it count" tour started with a signing at the shop. Mark Appleyard, Chad Tim Tim and Donny Barley stopped by in the morning for some donuts and coffee. Everyone that showed up got Element T's and autographs, and a few won new decks. Thanks to everyone who came out in the rain to hang out!

Save the whales

Rep and Destroy was going on at Rye yesterday, and Bren, Eddy, John-Nestor and I went up. I forgot to take pictures, except when we stopped for pizza and heard stories about whales.

Everyone got some tricks in the contest. Bren was the big winner with $20 for bigspin front board on the rail. Whales bro, whales.
